Speeding fines. We have the highest penalties for speeding in Australia. There is no margin for lenience like in other countries. We’ve talked with the police and stated our case. On a bike, you are hyper vigilant in your environment and that precludes staring at a speedo. They have advised they are willing to be lenient on a case by case basis.
Lane sharing. Lane filtering is when you ride your motorcycle at low speed between stationary or slow moving vehicles travelling in the same direction you are. The 2 lines or lanes of traffic must both be travelling in the same direction. If one of the lines or lanes is a dedicated turning lane (left or right) you must not lane filter using this lane.
You’re only allowed to lane filter in Queensland if you hold an open licence for the motorcycle you are riding and:
- your speed when filtering is 30km/h or less
- it’s safe to do so.
You’re not allowed to lane filter:
- at a speed more than 30km/h
- in school zones during school zone hours
- if you’re a learner or provisional licence holder
- A motorcycle rider is not allowed to use a bicycle lane to lane filter.
Wallabies. In the city. There’s even a colony of them here in Kewarra Beach – inconveniently on the side of the highway: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Wild+Kangaroo+Viewing+Location/@-16.7947756,145.6830536,16z . Not much road sense. They’ll easily bring down a bike.
Attire. It’s hot here. And humid. Sometimes hard to respect the ride and wear a T shirt. We will provide you with light weight summer vented jackets with internal armour.
Getting on a different motorcycle. Your reaction times and muscle memory are finely tuned and trained for an instant and accurate response on your own bike. It takes a little while to get used to your hire bike. Acclimatisation times may vary.
Tips from you. Please feel free to let us know your own thoughts and we’ll add them here and attribute them to you (first names).
